Common reasons people receive Social Security Disability

On Behalf of | May 25, 2022 | Social Security Disability

Social Security Disability payments are a source of income for people who are unable to work due to certain physical and mental health conditions. One common misconception of SSD is that it is for older adults. The minimum age to receive SSD is 18, although younger people may find it more difficult to win their disability cases.

These are some of the common reasons why people receive SSD benefits.

Vision or hearing loss

Vision and hearing loss are more likely to occur in older people but can occur at any age and for many reasons. Significant vision or hearing loss makes it difficult for many people to remain in their current jobs. If someone with these conditions wants to remain in their current field, SSD income can help tide them over until their employer makes appropriate accommodations so that they can continue.

Respiratory conditions

Certain respiratory conditions, such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, are another reason why people qualify for SSD. Sometimes these conditions develop as a result of being in certain lines of work and not having the proper protective equipment. For example, construction workers who deal with toxic dust and asbestos are more prone to developing respiratory diseases than the overall population.

Cancer

People who are unable to work due to cancer may also receive SSD. This provides some financial peace of mind for people undergoing treatment for cancer, which often comes with side effects like fatigue, nausea, and anemia.

Knowing some of the more common reasons why people receive SSD benefits is helpful for deciding whether or not to apply.
